Sew-a-thon for the Soul : Creating Touch Quilts for Dementia

  • Colour and Cloth

BOOK HERE

This week is Dementia Awareness week and on the 18th May a wonderful post came onto my Facebook feed.  It was about a lady called Grace MacNab who has been making 'Touch Quilts' for those living every day with Dementia and Alzheimers.  She discovered that the special 'sensory' appeal they had appeared to soothe and calm.  These quilts are large enough to cover the lap while sitting.

Dementia invited itself into our home last year and this article really made me want to do something practical that really seems to be making a difference.

I am opening my home for a special 12 hour 'Sew-a-thon' to create as many of these wonderful Touch Quilts as we can.  We can also make this a Sponsored 'Sew-a-thon' so extra funds can be raised as well as making the quilts. Both the quilts and any sponsorship will be donated to Alzheimer's NI  after the event.

Please read through this article that Grace has written on the quilts CLICK HERE.  Sewing skills are not necessary! If you can cut, pin, iron then your skills will be in high demand. The main aim is to bring everyone together and to sew every stitch with love (as Dolly would say).

I will have lots to fabric to sew, but if each person could bring a good selection of suitable fabrics ( see Grace's article for suggested fabrics) we will be able to create so much more. Quilting is all about using scraps of fabric, so any scraps you have will be useful.

I have added a small ticket price to this event to cover the cost of quilt batting / wadding and backing fabric.

Making will start at 12 noon on 17th June and end 12 hours later at MIDNIGHT on 17th June. You are welcome to stay as long as you wish.  Whatever time you can give will be all appreciated whether it be 1 hour or more.

All machines, cutting boards, scissors equipment will be provided.

If you are staying more than 5 hours please bring something to eat.  Bottomless Tea, coffee and juice will be provided throughout the event.

With advance thanks,

Christine, Colour and Cloth
