This 4 week (8 hour) crash course is for absolute beginners.  Even if you have never threaded a needle, or sewn a stitch before this course will arm you with the all essential sewing skills. Its back to basics in this class.  Each action packed class is 2 hours long so you get the maximum sewing experience.  Christine teaches with patience, enthusiasm, encouragement and experience.  Our very own Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her students!

We will cover the following:

WEEK 1 :  How to thread up the sewing machine and sew in a straight line.  How to cut cloth, learning about the grain lines and bias lines. Sewing seams so we can sew things together. And how to unpick stitches so we can rip it apart again!

WEEK 2 : How to hem a pair of trousers, a skirt or a pair of curtains.

WEEK 3 : Sewing in a zip, buttons and buttonholes, so you can get in and out of things.

WEEK 4: How to fit a garment by taking it in/out, and introducing darts and pleats.

In addition to all the above, you will learn how to press with the iron and pick up essential hand sewing stitches that will save you in any wardrobe emergency or malfunction!

We do not cover cutting out patterns and making garments in this class.

About your tutor: Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 36 years! She has over 25 years experience in fashion, film costume, and self employment in Northern Ireland. She teaches with patience, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step.  Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students. Since 2008 she has taught more than 2000 students.

The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television and in magazines.  This gives Christine access to her wardrobe where she can show students every seam, zip and different design that they will be learning.

Equipment: All sewing machines and sewing equipment is provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you wish.

Materials required at first class: 1 metre of medium weight calico cloth and 1 spool of thread, your choice of colour.  Additional haberdashery can be purchased in class.  Check out The Essential Sewing Kit for where to buy fabrics and lots of other resources.
