I call these classes 'Cooking with Colour' because that is exactly what happens in this experimental class! A fusion of foraging, recipe following, chemistry and colour creation all bundled up with a range of tie-dyeing techniques.
My passion for Natural Dyeing blossomed from blackberry picking at my Granny's every summertime and when it came to choosing our own A-level Textile project to investigate, I chose Natural Dyeing. I've loved it ever since!
We will be dyeing with natural fabrics and with a range of dyestuffs from around the world. These will include barks from South America. All dyestuffs and materials are provided. However you are welcome to bring your own material to dye. We will aim to dye 4 different fabrics and at least 4 different dye stuffs and with a range of mordants. We will create a recipe book of colour swatches rather than large fabric swatches.
Also learn about mordants and how to fix and change colours.
How to prepare yarn for dyeing.
This class aims to inspire and encourage experimentation. There are some rules in Natural Dyeing, but I like to bend them a little!
Class sizes are limited to 5 people so that learning is focused and fun. Please bring an apron if you have one, or wear old clothes. Gloves will be provided. Please bring your own lunch. Tea and coffee is provided.
