Materials required at first class:

  • Please bring a selection of your favourite t-shirts. These should be ones that you don't mind cutting up! Perhaps they no longer fit, or have seen better days, but you still love them and they hold a lot of memories of great times!

  •  A notepad, pencil and a camera will also be useful.

  • Safety pins are also very useful.

  • Also bring a cushion inner that will suit the size of your tshirt, I suggest a 16 or 18 inch. If your tee is a size 6 - 10, then a 14 inch will be better.

  • Some non- stretchy fabric (aprox 1/2 metre) . An old shirt is perfect. We aim to upcycle as much as possible on this workshop!

  • Bring a zip - in a great colour - I suggest one to match the colour of your tshirt. If you would like to make a button back, bring buttons. An envelope back requires neither.

Why learn to repair and reinvent?

In today's throw away society,  learning to sew is lifelong sustainable skill set that can both save us money and make us money.  Reinventing and redesigning allows us to dress individually and find our own style.  Owning something that no-one else has. By investing time to look after, launder and repair our clothing, rather than replacing it, we return to having an emotional connection with our clothes.  It helps to consider the journey our clothes make;  from the farmer planting the cotton seed, the weaver weaving the cloth, the pattern making, the stitcher and the point of purchase.  Our clothes are our second skin and they should be respected.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR ... Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 39 years! She has over 25 years experience in fashion and textiles. With a career spanning 8 years employment in the Fashion and Textiles Industry she now celebrates 10 years of self employment working in costume for film, theatre, television (Game of Thrones) and large scale productions. Christine tutored at Belfast Metropolitan College for 6 years before deciding to run her own brand of classes from home.  Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students. Since 2008 she has taught more than 2000 students. She has taught from age 5 to 95 years young!  She teaches with patience, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step. Click here to read testimonials from her past students.

Equipment: All sewing machines and sewing equipment will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you wish.  We have a mixture of modern and vintage sewing machines. Also an overlocker and a coverstitch machine, perfect for stitching jersey knits.

The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television (Great Interior Design Challenge) and in national interior magazines.  This gives Christine access to her wardrobe where 90% of her wardrobe is vintage, thrifted, re-invented and altered. She has been charity shopping since 1992 when she bought a pair of Spanish Leather boots for £5 in St Georges Market on the way to Art College. She has over 24 cushions in her living room, all handmade, and more scattered around the house. She has been sewing tee cushions for friends since 2010.
