ABOUT YOUR CLASS ... A home is all about putting your personal stamp on your surroundings and decor. Cushions are the quickest and most versatile way of updating a room and they are easy to make! What you need to bring to class:

  • Cotton fabric in a cushion (interior weight) . As we will be patchworking, this is a great opportunity to use up your fabric scraps or fat quarters. I often use clothes I no longer wear if the fabric is still in good condition. If you are buying fabrics, then a 1/4 metre of each colour/pattern is plenty for the front patchwork design. You will need 1/2 metre for the back of your cushion.

  • 1/2 metre of lightweight wadding 2mm is plenty.

  • 1 x 16 inch cushion pad. Larger size if you wish to make a larger cushion.

  • Please bring a zip or 3 buttons, you can decide which method you wish to close your cushion. If you wish to close your cushion using an Envelope backing then you do not need a zip or buttons.

  • Recommended stores: Dunelm Mill, The Cotton Print Factory Shop (upstairs for sale department). Click on The Essential Sewing Kit for more fabric stockists.

We will cover the following:

  • Before starting, we will look at the 24 cushions (and counting!) that Christine has made around her home. This will spark ideas for your own project.

  • How to plan your patchwork design and the possibilities of colour and fabric combinations

  • How to cut your cloth for a plump fitting cushion

  • How to create a simple patchwork design

  • How to quilt a simple patchwork design

  • Different methods of adding applique, through bondaweb, spray adhesive and stitching settings.

  • Everyone will work on a design appropriate to their individual skill level.

We aim for each student to go home with their own completed cushion closed in a method of their choice. However if the student chooses a complicated patchwork design, there may only be time to complete the front of the cushions, and the back will be finished in their own time.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR  Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 39 years! She has over 25 years experience in fashion and textiles. With a career spanning 8 years employment in the Fashion and Textiles Industry she now celebrates 10 years of self employment working in costume for film, theatre, television (Game of Thrones) and large scale productions. Christine tutored at Belfast Metropolitan College for 6 years before deciding to run her own brand of classes from home.  Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students. Since 2008 she has taught more than 2000 students. She has taught from age 5 to 95 years young!  She teaches with patience, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step. Click here to read testimonials from her past students.

Equipment: All sewing machines and sewing equipment will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you wish.  We have a mixture of modern and vintage sewing machines. Also an overlocker and a coverstitch machine, perfect for stitching jersey knits.

The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television (The Great Interior Design Challenge Series 2) and in magazines: House Beautiful, Ideal Home and Northern Woman.  She has 24 cushions in her living room alone, all of which she has made.  She loves cushions! She bought her 1st home in 2006 and has created a 'living breathing space with an emphasis on comfort'. She has just completed her first paid Interior Design job, re-designing the interior for Maitri Yoga Studio, Belfast.
