This is a 3 1/2 hour workshop, which includes a 15 break.

Saturday June 9th 09.30am - 1.00pm

This is a 3 1/2  hour workshop, which includes a 15 minute break.

I call these classes 'Cooking with Colour' because that is exactly what happens in this experimental class!  A fusion of foraging, recipe following, chemistry and colour creation all bundled up with a range of tie-dyeing techniques.

My passion for Natural Dyeing blossomed from blackberry picking at my Granny's every summertime and when it came to choosing our own A-level Textile project to investigate, I chose Natural Dyeing. I've loved it ever since!

We will be dyeing with both man made and natural fabrics and with a range of foraged and gleaned dyestuffs, all of which are either free or readily available locally.  All dyestuffs and materials are provided.  However you are welcome to bring your own material to dye. We will aim to dye 4 different fabrics and 4 different dye stuffs.  We will create a recipe book of colour swatches rather than large fabric swatches.

Also learn about mordants and how to fix and change colours.

How to prepare yarn for dyeing.

This class aims to inspire and encourage experimentation.  There are some rules in Natural Dyeing, but I like to bend them a little!

Please bring an apron if you have one, or wear old clothes.  Gloves will be provided.  Tea and coffee is provided.

Maximum in class: 5 students. Class sizes are limited to 5 people so that learning is focused and fun.  There must be a minimum of 3 bookings for the class to run.

There will be a 15 minute refreshment break with tea and coffee.  You are welcome to bring your own snacks.

FREE on street parking

About your tutor: Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 36 years! She has been dyeing with nature ever since picking blackberries at her Granny McFadden's house when she was a youngster.  She has over 25 years experience in fashion, film costume, and self employment in Northern Ireland. She teaches with patience, passion, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step.  Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students. Since 2008 she has taught more than 2000 students.

The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television and in magazines.  This gives Christine access to her wardrobe where she can show students every seam, zip and different design that they will be learning.
