Classes run every Wednesday for 8 weeks 

 

LEVEL: 1 BEGINNER

Class length: 8 x 2 1/2 hour sessions (20 hours teaching time)

Class size: Max 5 students so you reap the benefits of lots of tutor attention

Have you have always wanted to make your own clothes, but not sure where to start? Then this is the course for you. Aimed at Absolute Beginners this course will take you through everything you need to make your first garment.  It will give you sewing confidence and encouragement along every step of your exciting new sewing journey. 

About your tutor: Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 38 years! She has over 25 years experience in fashion, film costume, and self employment in Northern Ireland. She teaches with patience, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step.  Christine tutored at Belfast Metropolitan College for 6 years before deciding to run her own brand of classes from home.  Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students. Since 2008 she has taught more than 2000 students. She has taught from age 5 to 95 years young! Click here to read testimonials from her past students.

Materials required at first class: 1 metre of medium weight calico cloth and 1 spool of thread, your choice of colour. Additional haberdashery can be purchased in class. Check out The Essential Sewing Kit for where to buy fabrics and lots of other resources.

What you will learn:

We cover skills for 4 weeks (10 hours) 

  • How to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin.  Sewing straight lines, corners and curves. 
  • How to cut cloth and mark out patterns.
  • Essential seams and hems.
  • Inserting a lapped zip. Sewing on a button. Making a buttonhole
  • Darts to fit and shape. 
  • Learning to press with the iron for beautiful results.
  • How to choose a suitable pattern and fabric.
  • Troubleshooting your machine and machine maintenance.
  • Lots of essential sewing tips along the way!

Sewing your chosen garment for 4 weeks (10 hours)

  • Cutting your paper pattern
  • Marking up and cutting your fabric 
  • Sewing up and fitting as you go along
  • Finishing up your chosen design.

By the end of the of 8 weeks you will have made your first garment.*  Everyone will work on their own project suitable for Beginners level.  *Based on full attendance over the 8 weeks.

Equipment: All sewing machines and sewing equipment is provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you wish.

 

The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television and in magazines.  This gives Christine access to her wardrobe where she can show students every seam, zip and different design that they will be learning.
